Afghan Hound Dog Breed![]() The Afghan Hound dog breed is as ancient as a breed as you can get. It was bred to assist in the chase and downing of rabbits and gazelles for nomadic tribes in the Afghanistan mountains. The breed was virtually unknown to outsiders until the 1900s when they were first brought to England. This Hound has always been a fierce competitor in dog shows, but is no longer an ideal hunting dog for modern times. They reached what seemed to be a peak in popularity during the 1970s among pet owners, but interest has since diminished significantly. ![]() Afghan Hound Dog Breed: TemperamentThe Afghan Hound is very independent. Maybe too independent as owners have complained of their selective hearing when calling them by name. Although the breed seems to have lost much of its usefulness on the hunt, it still needs daily exercise. They tend to chase everything in sight, but usually get along with other pets so long as they are inside of the house. Their overall disposition is pleasant, but they may bore your children to death because they aren't all that interested in playing most of the time. ![]() Afghan Hound: HealthIt is ideal that your Afghan Hound get exercise in the form of a short run, or prolonged walk daily. They are an inside dog at heart, but seem to do best when allowed to split time between indoors and out. The long feathery hair will require special attention and careful brushing every three days. For maximum good looks a trip to the groomer every once in awhile certainly wouldn't hurt! This is a relatively healthy dog, having no problems directly correlated with their breed other than cataracts. Well cared for Afghan Hounds may live up to 14 years of age! |
