Basset Hound Dog Breed![]() The Basset Hound dog breed is a short legged, heavy boned canine with a strong nose whose bloodline can be traced back to the 1500s when mention of the breed was made throughout various manuscripts on badger hunting. Their specialty lies in trailing rabbits, but are well suited to hunt any creature of the furry variety. Bassets were brought from their home country of France to England and America in the late 1800s and have increasingly grown in popularity. They still excel at hunting hare, but have also taken on roles as competent field trial dogs. ![]() Basset Hound Dog Breed: TemperamentBasset Hounds are certainly one of the most laid back canines around. They are not only good with dogs and other pets, but are great with children, and can be quite affectionate. It is also one of the most stubborn dogs you will ever meet. Once they catch a scent and are on the trail there can be no negotiating with them. This is not the dog for a person that cannot stand the sight of drool. Just giving you fair warning! ![]() Basset Hound Dog Breed: HealthThe Basset Hound's limbs are not in proportion with the rest of their body, so they tend to have back problems. Children should be instructed to be careful and avoid putting pressure on their back while playing. The wrinkles around their face will need daily cleaning to avoid any skin irritation and conditions; however, the rest of their coat is very easy to maintain. It is recommended that they function as indoor dogs with a yard to exercise in. Just like any other dog, they do need to go on a daily walk. This breed does tend to have weight problems if overfed and not given enough exercise. The main health risks are canine hip dysplasia, glaucoma, gastric torsion, entropion, thrombopathy, elbow dysplasia, and osteochondritis dissecans and to a lesser degree patellar luxation. Their lifespans are highly variable ranging from anywhere between 8-12 years. |
