Border Terrier Dog Breed![]() The Border Terrier dog breed, popular for its association with the Border Hunt, was developed in the 1700s along the border of Scotland and England. This little canine is thought to be the oldest breed of English terriers alive today. Although their ancestry is not well documented, their closest cousin most likely is the Dandie Dinmont. The breed finds its roots as a farming dog whose sole purpose was to seek out and kill foxes on the property. The dog had gone by many other names in its history, such as the Coquetdale Terrier; however, the title Border Terrier became the official name in 1870 when it first entered the ring at dog show competitions. The tiniest of the terriers would be accepted by the AKC in 1930, and is slowly gaining popularity among pet owners. ![]() Border Terrier Dog Breed: TemperamentThe Border Terrier is a fast and curious canine, which is exactly what one should expect from a dog that was bred to run alongside horses on fox hunts. They may be a little too fast and curious for this own good, and excel at escaping from yards that are not fully secured. Borders typically do well with other pets and dogs because of its history as a pack hunter so long as those other pets are not rodents, and they will get along just fine with children. In fact, they make great playmates and companions for both children and adults alike. Terriers characteristically have an affinity for digging holes in search of vermin, and barking. You can bet on both with this breed. ![]() Border Terrier Dog Breed: HealthThe Border Terrier loves to explore and should be allowed to do if in a safe area. Their exercise requirements are moderate and can be met by a prolonged walk followed by a game such as fetch or tug of war. These dogs are well suited to live outside in places with fair climates, but it is advised that they be allowed to roam in and out of the house so that they can partake in any family activities. The wire like coat will require brushing every week. Dead hairs will need to be stripped quarterly. Borders are healthy little dogs that have no elevated risks associated with their breed other than patellar luxation. Expect to provide a loving home for this canine for 12-15 years. |
