Borzoi Dog Breed

borzoi

The Borzoi dog breed, also referred to as the Russian Wolfhound, was bred to course wolves in the middle ages. Being a Sighthound by nature, they were lead to the wolves with the assistance of Scenthounds, and were dispatched in groups of two or three to tackle and subdue their quarry.

This was mostly done for sport, and the hunters would typically release the wolves soon after they were apprehended. The Borzoi were a dog popular with Russian nobility, and when the Russian Revolution was in full swing almost all of the Borzoi were slaughtered.

Luckily they had oftentimes been given as gifts to the heads of other nations, so the breed survived.

Borzoi Dog Breed: Temperament

Borzoi make excellently well behaved house dogs; however, once they are outside their hunting instinct takes over. Any animal that runs is fair game to be chased down. Most are fairly laid back, and some are reported to be rather apprehensive. They are usually fine with children, but aren't as good of play mates as other breeds might be.

Borzoi: Health

Their coats will need to be brushed and combed three times a week, and as a warning they shed more hair than your average canine. Exercise needs are fulfilled by a prolonged walk followed by a short run in a safe and secure area. They are well suited to live outside, so long as your area does not get too hot, when provided with a dog house and comfortable bedding.

The main health issue with this breed is gastric torsion, also known as bloat. Cardiomyopathy and hypothyroidism are also seen occasionally.

Borzoi have a life expectancy of around 11 years.
