Dachshund Dog Breed

dachshund

The Dachshund dog breed, also affectionately named the wiener dog by some, was developed in the 1500s to hunt badgers in Germany. Their name literally means badger dog in German.

It wasn't until the 1800s that special care was taken in developing the dogs, and it took until 1910 for a breed standard to be established. There are three varieties of Dachshunds today consisting of smooth, long, and wire coats. There are also mini and standard sizes of those variations.

Dachshund Dog Breed: Temperament

Dachshunds are interesting little Scenthounds that enjoy their independence, but like to join in on family fun whenever possible. They aren't the most tolerant of small children or strangers and will nip if they feel it is necessary, but seem to be fine with children within their own family.

Due to their hunting background, expect to find a hole or two dug up in the back yard from time to time.

Dachshund: Health

Dachshund's are well adapted for life in an apartment and their exercise needs are more than manageable. A half hour walk on the leash is usually sufficient, but they are happiest when provided a yard play in.

Coat care really is variable upon whether they are smooth, long, or wire coated. Smooth coats require the least attention, while wire coats require once a week brushing and a biannual trip to the groomers for trimming and dead hair removal. The long haired versions will need to be combed twice a week, with trimming when needed for good looks.

The most prevalent illness seen in this breed is intervertebral disk disease. Keratoconjunctitis sicca can also be problematic.

Dachshunds may live to be as old as 14 years of age, and we aren't talking doggie years!
