Hound Dog Breeds

hound dog

The hound dog breeds consist of those canines that enjoy the chase. They hunt down mammals with either superior speed, in the case of the Sighthounds, or track them down with their noses if they are Scenthounds.

The hound group is thought to be one of the oldest groups of dogs, having helped humans bring down game and hunt before firearms were invented.

One of the more popular and iconic hunting hounds are pictured above as they ready themselves to go on a fox hunt. As you browse the pictures and pages below, you may discover it is not too difficult to discern the Sighthounds from the Scenthounds.

The Sighthounds are typically built for speed, and have a more slender build. The Scenthounds on the other hand have a much fuller build. You may find it perplexing that some hounds don't really look like hounds at all.

You may search the pages using the custom dog breed search utility below, or you can simply select those breeds on the page that interest you by clicking on their names listed in alphabetic order.
