Hunting Dog Breeds

The true hunting dog breeds in this day and age are not the hounds that hunt independently of their owners; rather, they are the sporting group members that assist their masters by loyally awaiting their signal.

They can locate game by pointing, flush them out of hiding and retrieve the kills. Most breeds are adept enough to perform several functions, which makes them much more versatile in the field. For example, not all pointers only point, and some spaniel's are good at retrieving.

Hunting Dog Training

Whether you opt for a sporting or a hound dog your companion will need to be well trained. There are a variety of training techniques available to meet the needs of your hound, bird dog, or gun dog.

Some choose to have their dogs enrolled in early start puppy training programs when they are around 5 months old. It is never too early to get them used to commands and rifle fire; however, it is not wise to try to remedy any undesirable behavior at this point. The goal is to have them enjoy hunting out in the field. We don't want them to associate it with something they don't like.

Any foundation or steady to wing shot training when the dog is around 1 year old should be done by a professional for the best results. It may be a long, and tedious process, but it will be worth it!
